Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba: Two Legends Step Away After a Storybook MLS Cup Night

Moumita Dutta

Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba ended their extraordinary careers in the most poetic fashion imaginable. They bowed out as MLS Cup champions with Inter Miami. The night could easily have unfolded differently. Vancouver came inches from altering the script.

However, fate aligned when the margins favoured Miami in decisive moments. A double ricochet off both posts kept the score level. Then the Herons responded by taking full command. They eventually secured the trophy that had eluded them until now.

As confetti settled across Chase Stadium, Lionel Messi walked toward the suites to embrace the families of the teammates who shared some of football’s greatest eras with him. The celebrations felt less like a typical title ceremony.

It surely felt more like a gathering of lifelong friends. After lifting the MLS Cup, reflecting on the magnitude of Busquets and Alba ending their journey as winners, Messi told ESPN, “I’m happy they can leave with this title. They are the best friends. I love them very much.”

Legacies of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba

Sergio Busquets completed his 831st professional match and Alba his 677th. Together they closed careers defined by intelligence, consistency, and an almost artistic connection to the sport. Their final season required internal adjustments.

They had to adapt to reduced mobility, sharper decision-making, and a willingness to trust younger teammates. However, in pivotal moments they still produced glimmers of their old mastery. Javier Mascherano, their former Barcelona teammate and now Miami’s coach, spoke about the two fondly.

He called the Cup win “the best possible way” for two icons to say goodbye. The win adds to an already staggering resume for both. Busquets leaves football as one of the most decorated midfielders in history. He is revered for qualities that often escaped statistical recognition.

Meanwhile, Alba departs as one of the great attacking full-backs of his era. His chemistry with Messi remains one of modern football’s most memorable partnerships. Their impact in Miami extended well beyond trophies. Young players repeatedly credited the duo for elevating the club’s standards across a gruelling 58-match season.

A Farewell Filled With Emotion

Their departure had been planned months in advance. Yet the final whistle still carried a sense of disbelief. Both players were visibly emotional as they addressed the supporters one last time. In their joint farewell, they said, “Now we’ll be watching from the other side.”

Eventually, I realized I could combine my passion for writing with my love for football, and I’ve never looked back. My favorite part of the job is everything—when you’re doing what you love, even a late-night deadline feels like extra time in a thrilling cup final. Lastly, Lionel Messi is the GOAT.
