A tribute to the legendary career of the welterweight fighter Robbie Lawler and his induction to the UFC Hall of Fame!
In the world of mixed martial arts, few fighters embody the warrior spirit like Robbie Lawler. The man nicknamed ‘Ruthless’ has carved his name into UFC history with blood, sweat, and an unwavering will to battle forward.
Now, after his retirement from the sport, the UFC is remembering this legend and honouring him at the highest level!
Now, as announced during the UFC 313 broadcast on March 8, 2025, Lawler will join the UFC Hall of Fame Class of 2025. This honor makes him a two-time Hall of Famer, as his legendary bout with Rory MacDonald was already enshrined in the Fight Wing back in 2023. From his days as a young prospect to becoming welterweight champion, Lawler’s journey through the octagon has been nothing short of remarkable.

The fight that first put Lawler in the Hall of Fame happened at UFC 189 in July 2015. This wasn’t just a fight; it was war! Going toe-to-toe with Rory MacDonald for nearly five rounds, both men pushed themselves beyond normal human limits.

Blood poured from MacDonald’s shattered nose. The image of them staring each other down at the end of the fourth round, both faces masked in red, has become iconic in the sport. Despite being badly hurt in the third round, Lawler rallied back to finish MacDonald with a punch to the nose one minute into the fifth round. The bout won numerous ‘Fight of the Year’ awards and showed why combat sports can be both horrifying and beautiful at the same time.
If one image could sum up Robbie Lawler’s career, it might be his mangled upper lip from the MacDonald fight. His lip was not just cut – it was completely split into two separate pieces. As Dana White said, when he talked, only one part of his lip moved.
This was tough to look at last night but the Dr did an AMAZING job fixing it. Lawler looked great tonight. pic.twitter.com/HFubRvy37s

Most fighters would have crumbled from such an injury, but Lawler seemed almost unbothered, continuing to throw punches with the same ferocity. Doctors later needed extensive stitches to repair the damage. His nonchalant attitude toward extreme physical damage cemented his reputation as perhaps the toughest man to ever compete in the UFC!
With a professional record spanning 47 fights across multiple organizations, Lawler’s career has been as long as it is impressive. His current record stands at 30-16-0 (1 NC). His UFC journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. After an early UFC stint, he found himself fighting in organizations like Elite XC and Strikeforce before making a triumphant return.
His career renaissance peaked when he defeated Johny Hendricks at UFC 181 in 2014 to capture the welterweight title. He defended it twice, including the MacDonald bloodbath and a razor-close decision against Carlos Condit. Other notable opponents on Lawler’s hit list include Donald Cerrone, Matt Brown, and Nick Diaz.
Few fighters get to write their own final chapter, but Robbie Lawler did exactly that. While most aging fighters fade with a string of losses, ‘Ruthless’ exploded in his retirement fight. Lawler knocked out Niko Price in just 38 seconds at UFC 290, proving that even at 42, he could still separate men from their consciousness.

After the fight, the notoriously stoic Lawler even showed rare emotion during the UFC’s tribute video that followed. He finally hung up his gloves in 2023 after a perfect ending and a legendary career that will live on in the heart and minds of UFC fans all around the world!
