With only two points separating Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top of the table, the two teams faced each other at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. In what can be described as a fiery El Clasico, Real came out as the winner navigating through a lot of drama throughout the match.

They are now five points ahead of the Catalan side at the first place in the La Liga table. Considering Barcelona dealing with too many key injuries, unstable defense, and inconsistent form, they were never the favourites going into the match. Even so, it was a tough fight between the two.

1. El Clasico Doesn’t Disappoint With Drama

The match duly delivered on tension from the beginning of the match to the end. It got heated as soon as a penalty was awarded to Real Madrid within three minutes into the match. Although, only for the decision to be reversed after a VAR review.

Minutes later, a goal by Kylian Mbappe was disallowed for offside, adding to Madrid’s frustration. As the match progressed, Barca’s offline trap caused them more headache throughout the game. Yet, Barca just couldn’t contain their flurry of attacks, causing them to get frustrated.

As the match reached its climax, tempers flared. A second-yellow red card was given to Pedri in stoppage time. It was then followed by a brawl involving players from both benches, prompting intervention by officials and police. Needless to say, there was no shortage of drama in this El Clasico.

2. Lamine Yamal Invisible After Big Talks

Young star Lamine Yamal arrived at the showdown after openly criticising Real Madrid a few days back. During a Twitch broadcast on Kings League before the Clasico, talking about Real Madrid, he said, “They steal, they complain.” He also posted a picture of him celebrating a goal with frustrated Real Madrid fans in the background before the match.

Thus, fuelling the pre-match narrative. Yet once the action kicked off, his impact was negligible. Despite being one of Barcelona’s most relied attackers, his hallmark creativity and incisive movement were largely absent. Throughout the game, he offered little in front of goal. Amid a bruising contest he appeared subdued. It was far removed from the influential figure many expected.

3. Barcelona Lament Defensive Errors

Defensive instability has plagued Barcelona’s campaign so far. And this fixture laid bare those vulnerabilities. They left Real Madrid’s midfield and attack too much space to exploit. Bellingham was allowed to time his runs into the box. He was even left unmarked which resulted in Barca conceding the second, Madrid’s match-winning goal.

Barring VAR’s involvement, they awarded Real Madrid two penalties. Szczesny’s heroics saved them a humiliation as he saved Mbappe’s penalty. Barcelona’s injury list also played a role. Regulars were absent, and that absence of continuity cost them clarity at the back. Even though the introduction of Ronald Araujo late on offered a glimmer of hope, it proved too little, too late.
