Liverpool Lose 3-2 to Brentford, Suffer Fourth Consecutive Premier League Defeat

Liverpool’s alarming Premier League slide continued as they fell 3-2 to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. It marked their fourth consecutive league defeat. Despite late strikes from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool were undone by another defensive collapse.

This defeat now leaves them sixth in the table and four points behind the current league leaders Arsenal. Liverpool were behind almost immediately when Dango Ouattara reacted promptly to a flicked-on long throw to open the scoring for the home side in the fifth minute.

Kevin Schade doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time after Mikkel Damsgaard’s precise through ball sliced open a disorganised defence. Kerkez pulled one back in stoppage time with his debut goal for the Reds. However, Brentford restored their cushion just after the hour mark.

Virgil van Dijk’s challenge on Ouattara inside the box was deemed a foul following a VAR review. Igor Thiago stepped up and converted the penalty to make it 3-1 for Brentford. Salah’s late volley under the bar gave Liverpool brief hope. However, Brentford held firm to secure consecutive wins and deepen the champions’ woes.

Arne Slot and Virgil Van Dijk React After Liverpool Loss

Talking to the media after the match, Arne Slot admitted frustration at the recurring issues plaguing his side. Slot said, “Another time disappointing. Conceding three goals is far too much if you want to win a game of football. Teams know which strategy to play against us, and we haven’t found the answer yet.”

The Dutchman lamented Liverpool’s lack of defensive organisation. He added that frequent summer changes had disrupted their cohesion. Captain Virgil van Dijk echoed his manager’s disappointment. Speaking after the loss, the captain said, “Everyone has to look in the mirror, including myself.”

He added, “We won’t get out of this just by talking. We need to support each other and work harder.” The result marked the first time since early 2021 that Liverpool have lost four consecutive league matches, three of them in London. Salah’s late goal ended his personal drought.

Yet, it did little to mask the ongoing problems at both ends of the pitch. Slot’s men have now gone nine games in all competitions without a clean sheet. The run proves the extent of their defensive troubles. Slot now faces a defining few weeks to steady Liverpool’s faltering title defence and rediscover their form.
