Real Madrid returned to winning ways in La Liga but the night carried a worrying moment for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Real Madrid defeated Athletic Club 3-0 and moved a point behind La Liga leaders Barcelona. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered one of his best displays in Spain so far yet ended up leaving the pitch early with another injury concern.

The England international had started brightly and produced a stunning assist for Kylian Mbappe inside eight minutes. It looked like a turning point in his Madrid career after a stop start season. But frustration returned soon after half time when he went down holding his right ankle. He was in clear pain after his right foot was stamped on by Alejandro Rego.

The impact forced Alexander Arnold’s ankle to twist awkwardly as he tried to play a pass forward. The right-back sat on the turf disappointedly with both legs stretched out and stared up at the sky. Federico Valverde came over to support him while Madrid physios assessed the problem. The right back was withdrawn in the 55th minute and will now undergo medical tests to assess the damage.

This setback arrives at a difficult time in his first season in Spain. Alexander-Arnold has struggled with muscle issues since joining from Liverpool in the summer. He played five times at the Club World Cup before suffering an injury that cut short his involvement. A hamstring knock in September then ruled him out for more than a month. He only returned to the starting side on November 30. Los Blancos manager Xabi Alonso will now wait for clarity on Alexander-Arnold’s condition in the coming days.

Midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was also substituted with an ankle problem. However, early signs suggest the French midfielder’s injury is not serious. Madrid will hope both recover quickly as the title race remains tight. Barcelona lead the table by one point after 15 games. Villarreal and Atletico Madrid are chasing close behind.
