QB Drake Maye has a hilarious response to why UK fans should support the Patriots

Natasha Bose

Drake Maye's funny press conference had Patriots fans cracking up! Find out what the quarterback said that got everyone talking and laughing.

Drake Maye and the New England Patriots are set to face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday at Wembley Stadium. Interestingly, the Jaguars just played the Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week, while this marks the Patriots’ first trip back to London since 2012, when Tom Brady led the team to a dominant 45-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams with four touchdown passes.

During a media session on Friday, Drake Maye was asked why UK fans who don’t already have a team should support the Patriots. His answer seemed to amuse the press, though it’s hard to tell from the transcript whether he was being serious.

Get it? New England. Like England, but newer. Please don’t dwell on the history between the two countries or think about who the Patriots’ mascot would aim his musket at if he were real.

What state does the New England Patriots represent?

It’s worth noting that New England played a key role in the 18th-century American Revolution, rebelling against British rule. The name Patriots is a direct nod to that revolutionary spirit. The team’s history, starting with its 1959 founding in the old AFL and the 1960 hiring of their first coach, Lou Saban, makes the connection clear.

The team colors, which many describe as pretty sweet, also tie back to that revolutionary era. Boston sportswriters picked the name Patriots in a contest, emphasizing this heritage.

As stated on the team’s Wikipedia page:

“The most popular choice – and the one that [team owner Billy] Sullivan selected – was the ‘Boston Patriots,’ with ‘Patriots’ referring to the colonists of the Thirteen Colonies who rebelled against British control during the American Revolution and in July 1776 declared the United States of America an independent nation, which heavily involved the then-colony of Massachusetts.”

Immediately thereafter, artist Phil Bissell of The Boston Globe developed the ‘Pat Patriot’ logo.”

So, the name New England doesn’t imply a connection to modern England. In fact, many colonists from that region were among the early voices leading the charge against Britain. The team continues to honor this history, often showcasing “Militia” reenactors at games. Somewhere, King George III might just be rolling in his grave over Maye’s remarks.

Who do the New England Patriots play next?

The Patriots will take on the Jaguars in a highly anticipated game in London this Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, at Wembley Stadium.

Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season kicks off Sunday morning with this clash between the Jaguars and Patriots. It will be the Jaguars’ second game in London in as many weeks, as they aim to secure their second win of the season, just like the Patriots.

Got into sports media the same way most people do: by (fortunate) accident. Started with SEO writing, took on a few sports gigs, and now here we are! I cover games, trades, player drama—whatever needs words.
Favorite part? The chaos. One day it’s a blockbuster trade, the next it’s a goat running onto the field. Never boring.
