Paul George plays through pain with injections: Report

Suryansh Kumar

Paul George is using injections to stay on the court which is a major concern in the long run for the 76ers as he's on a four-year max contract.

The Philadelphia 76ers forward, Paul George was part of the free-agency saga this offseason which saw him join the Philadelphia 76ers from the Los Angeles Clippers. Since, signing the max contract of four-years for $212 million, George has struggled with injuries and is yet to find his consistent form and pay dividends on his max contract.

Paul George missed the first five games of the season with a bruise in his left knee which left the 76ers with a 1-4 start. After playing eight games, George’s bruise in his left knee returned which made him miss the next three games and the 76ers went 1-2 in his absence. In his first consistent spell, the star forward played 22 games out of the 27 and the 76ers improved from a 3-14 to 17-27. However, George was struck again with injuries, and this time in his left pinky finger with an extensor tendon injury which sat him out for five consecutive matches.

According to the latest reports by Shams Charania, “Most recently, he’s had tendon damage in his left pinky that he’s been fighting,” Charania added. “He’s been doing everything he can, though, to be on the court and be available. I’m told it’s to the point where he has gotten injections to play and compete over the last four or five games.”

His shooting woes were quiet evident in 76ers recent loss to the Brooklyn Nets by 96-100, George shot 1/7 from the field and only scored two points in 37 minutes of play. The forward has shot less than 30% from the field in eight of the games and less than 15% from the three-point line in eight games (minimum four or more attempts). (Data up to the Brooklyn Nets game on Feb 12, 2025).

Philadelphia 76ers injury woes

The Philadelphia 76ers have major injury issues with Joel Embiid and Paul George missing chunks of games and battling with injuries while playing. The 76ers are 20-34 and sit outside the play-in spot behind the 22-33 Chicago Bulls. Paul George is using injections to stay on the court which is a major concern in the long run for the 76ers as he’s on a four-year max contract.

As the season progresses, 76ers would like to shut down George if their playoff chances are near zero and he’s still on medication to play regular season games. Shams also added “That’s something players do come playoff time, not necessarily in the regular season.”
