Ottawa Senators Reassign Defenseman Max Guenette to AHL Affiliate Belleville for Further Development and Depth Adjustment
On Wednesday, the Ottawa Senators announced that defenseman Max Guenette will be reassigned to AHL Belleville. The club currently has an active roster of 22 players.
With Ottawa set to play the Capitals tomorrow, Guenette may be called up again after extending the duration of his temporary waiver exemption by a day. Jacob Bernard-Docker and Travis Hamonic, both bound for injured reserve, are not nearing a comeback, so sending Guenette down means they lack an additional healthy defenseman.
His participation mainly depends on the condition of teammate Thomas Chabot, who exited Tuesday’s shutout victory against the Islanders after a shot from Adam Pelech hit him in the face during the first period. He did not come back to the game, and head coach Travis Green mentioned after the match that they would provide an update on his condition today.
Ottawa sent for Guenette, 23, from Belleville last week after Hamonic was placed on IR the previous day. He’s been strictly serving as injury insurance, however, and has remained healthy for five consecutive games since the promotion.

Chosen 187th overall in the 2019 draft, Guenette has played eight NHL games, all with the Sens during the past two seasons. This month’s recall marked his first of the season following his clearance through waivers during training camp.
During his time in Belleville, the defensively focused Guenette has thrived, earning nine points and a team-high +16 rating over 27 games. The 6’2″, 209-pound right-handed player is an alternate captain for the AHL team in his fourth season as a professional.
