24-time Grand Slam champion is hunting down another success down under.
After a dominant performance in the Round of 128 at the Australian Open 2026, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic faces Francesco Maestrelli of Italy on Thursday. The 38-year-old Serbian has been on the quest for an elusive 25th major for over two years, and has to navigate through a tough draw to get there. Meanwhile, Maestrelli has stunned fans at Melbourne Park with an outstanding level since the qualifying event.
Djokovic was initially slated to play the Adelaide International 2026, but pulled out due to the lack of match fitness. Yet, he looked the part in a straight sets rout of Pedro Martinez in Round-1. The World No. 4 has now achieved 100 wins at three out of the four Grand Slams, with the US Open (95) being the last one standing. In 2025, Djokovic won the Hellenic Championship in Athens, before withdrawing from the Nitto ATP Finals. He was also the runner-up in Miami, and made the semis at all the majors.

Having completed one of the best performances of his life, Maestrelli was a 6-4 3-6 6-7(4) 6-1 6-1 victor against Terence Atmane in his opener. Entering AO as the 24th seed in qualifying, three solid wins ensured a main draw entry for the 23-year-old Italian. Already his best outing at a Grand Slam, Maestrelli is certain to rise from his ranking of No. 141 in the world. He is a four-time champion on the ATP Challenger Tour as well as a two-time ITF Tour WTT winner.

Our Pick: Novak Djokovic to Win 3-0 at -285
Djokovic has an astonishing record in the second round of Grand Slams. Even in terms of ranking, the 10-time Australian Open champ is 137 spots higher than his opponent. The Italian likes to go out wide on the deuce court, and down the middle on the ad court due to the nature of his service motion. But against Djokovic, this will fall to his dominant forehand from where he hits a high percentage of return winners.
Fatigue could also play a major role in determining the outcome of Thursday’s fixture. While Nole has only been on court for two hours, Maestrelli has already encountered four draining battles at this year’s Australian Open. With a career record of 1163-233 and over 10,000 service games played on this surface throughout his ATP stint, Djokovic is an outright favorite. Due to the one-sided look of the betting market ahead of this clash, Djokovic 3-0 becomes a best bet at -285 odds.
There is no available head-to-head record between Novak Djokovic and Francesco Maestrelli at the moment. The rivalry stands at 0-0 ahead of the Australian Open 2026 Round of 64.
