One of the great rags to riches stories in recent times.
23-year-old sensation Terence Atmane has turned the tide in his favour at the 2025 Cincinnati Masters. Having come through qualifying, the southpaw has overcome multiple hurdles to enter the semifinal stage against all odds. He is set to face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final four, in the toughest battle yet. Atmane’s story of shutting down the critics is an inspiration for one and all.
Atmane started in the qualifying rounds, where he defeated Jasika and Tu in straight sets to advance to the main draw. In his opening match, the Frenchman drew Nishioka – a man who had beaten him in the past. Yet, Atmane breezed past the Japanese sensation to book a clash against 15th seed Flavio Cobolli. Here, the World No. 136 edged his Italian counterpart in three thrilling sets to make headlines.

After comfortably beating Brazilian prodigy Joao Fonseca in the Round of 32, Atmane had a blockbuster encounter against World No. 4 and Grand Slam finalist Taylor Fritz in the pre-quarterfinal stage. Despite losing the opening set, Atmane countered the American’s attacks to leave him with no answers. He followed it up with another upset win in the quarterfinals vs. World No. 9 Holger Rune.
Prior to the Cincinnati Open, Terence Atmane had a miserly tour-level record of 1-4 in 2025. He had won just five main draw matches on the ATP circuit before this week. Nonetheless, his phenomenal run to the semis will ensure that he earns at least $332,160, which eclipses the $310,376 that he had earned all season long. “It’s pretty insane to be honest,” said the 23-year-old after his QF win.
In September 2024, Atmane abruptly lost his sponsorship deal with Asics. Despite breaking into the Top-120 and reaching the third round at the Italian Open, the Frenchman walked on court with Nike gear at the Shanghai Masters. Since then, Atmane has been competing without a primary agent, or a sponsor – relying completely on his personal resources.
“I cannot believe it,” he continued, after beating Rune to earn back-to-back Top-10 victories. “Being here in the semifinals of a Masters-1000, breaking into the Top-100 and even more with the win tonight. It’s also a lot of money for me, so it’s going to be very helpful for my career. It means a lot to me; I’m very emotional about it.”
Terence Atmane is guaranteed to be ranked within the ATP Top-70 after the 2025 Cincinnati Masters. He will face Jannik Sinner in the semifinals on Saturday.
