Rohan Singh

Here's how Nico Hulkenberg brought joy in Sauber's camp after disappointment in qualifying.

Kick Sauber has been almost non-existent from the 2025 Formula 1 championship. Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto couldn’t get themselves into the top-10 for the last eight races. Incidentally, Sauber had a really positive first race in 2025. Hulkenberg was able to claim more points that both Ferraris in Australia.

After their amazing first race of 2025, Sauber wad completely off the pace. Both of their drivers were struggling to get out of Q1. Bortoleto in particular is a complete mess in the 2025 season. He is still pointless after nine races. The Spanish GP was a better weekend for the team. Even though Hulkenberg did not have a great qualifying, Gabriel Bortoleto was starting from 12th. Although, as the race progressed it was Hulkenberg who took charge.

Nico Hulkenberg Goes Fifth in the Spanish GP

Nico Hulkenberg was racing on a two-stop strategy. Hulkenberg’s pace was incredibly well for a Sauber. There’s no doubt that Kick Sauber is currently among the worst cars on the grid.

Even though, Hulkenberg had no chance to get away with points in the race, he ended up making overtakes right from the first lap. In the final stint of the race Hulkenberg was well behind Lewis Hamilton. The safety car caused by Antonelli came to him as a boon. Like other drivers, Nico Hulkenberg went on to pit for soft tyres.

There was no chance that Hulkenberg in a Sauber would close the gap with a Ferrari. But Lewis Hamilton’s issues has other plans. Throughout the race Hamilton was struggling to keep the car stable. As soon as the race restarted, Nico Hulkenberg got to work pushing Lewis Hamilton. He was gaining on Lewis Hamilton before making a lunge for the pass. To everyone’s surprise, Hamilton could only give way to the attacking Sauber. The commentators went crazy as they saw the Sauber getting ahead of Hamilton finally.

Hulkenberg’s impressive drive found it’s final milestone with his overtake on Hamilton. After the race, the top-3 drivers were equally in awe of the overtake. The podium finishers were unable to hide their surprise over the fact that one of the last teams on the grid overtook a Ferrari. In total, Nico Hulkenberg gained 10 positions during the Spanish GP.
