NHL Investigates Dallas Stars for Alleged Unauthorized Practice

Stars Under Scrutiny for Possible Rule Violation; Team Loses to Wild in Overtime Following Investigation Announcement

With the NHL resuming games after the holiday break, an investigation has been launched regarding the Dallas Stars. According to Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet’s Saturday Headlines, the Stars are alleged to have held an unauthorized practice with a coach present.

Friedman stated that the Stars are cooperating with the league during the investigation, as the NHL has a strict policy against such activities. Teams are prohibited from holding official practices or traveling to their next game location without receiving prior approval from the league.

“There are rules about what you’re not allowed to do, You’re not allowed to practice, you are not allowed to provide ice to players. The Stars had some kind of skate on Boxing Day, and that has gotten the league’s attention.” : Friedman said.

“Some teams have to travel, They can’t practice in advance. It’s considered a competitive disadvantage,” Friedman mentioned.

There is precedent for penalties in such situations. The Toronto Maple Leafs were fined $100,000 several years ago for traveling to their next city without official clearance, and the Philadelphia Flyers faced a similar issue about a decade ago.

The Stars hosted the Minnesota Wild as the league resumed play after the break, negating the need for travel. However, they could still face a significant penalty if the investigation confirms they violated the league’s rules. Friedman suggested that the Stars did hold a practice with a coach present before receiving league approval.

In their game against the Wild on December 27th, the Stars lost 3-2 in overtime after leading 2-0 heading into the third period. The Wild staged a comeback, with young defenseman Brock Faber scoring the game-winning goal just 35 seconds into overtime.
