Today, the NHL and Fanatics introduced the new Discover NHL Winter Classic® uniforms that will be worn by the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues at Wrigley Field on December 31. Both jerseys have unique features such as city-specific elements on the necklines and helmets, as well as the “NHL Winter Classic” label on the bottom hem.
The NHL Winter Classic uniform for the Blackhawks honors the team’s history while incorporating fresh design features. The jersey has a traditional lace-neck collar, inspired by hockey’s beginnings, paired with a vintage cream color that evokes the nostalgia of the Original Six period.
The front crest features stars from the Chicago flag and the back numbers include subtle pinstripes, paying homage to Chicago’s rich baseball history with unique design elements. The components combine to form a uniform that pays tribute to the team’s rich history as well as the city’s overall sports heritage.
The NHL Winter Classic uniform of the Blues honors the hockey history of the city. The main logo on the jersey is the first instance in team history where the Blue Note is not the main design feature on the front.
The font and numbers in the jersey were influenced by an unused prototype Blues uniform from 1966, with the addition of a newly designed vintage-inspired “Blue Note” on the shoulder. Finally, the inside back neck and hem loop labels showcase fleur-de-lis designs as a tribute to the city of St. Louis.
In this Metropolitan Division match-up, Martin Necas is the player to keep an eye on as he aims to lengthen his 14-game point streak for the successful Hurricanes (13-4-0) playing at Wells Fargo Center.
Necas scored twice and provided two assists in a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, accumulating 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in his last 13 games for Carolina, who have emerged victorious in 11 of those matches.
The Philadelphia Flyers (8-9-2) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end after a 3-2 defeat against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. Philadelphia blueliner Travis Sanheim is on a three-game streak with points, accumulating six points from two goals and four assists.
General Manager Don Sweeney of the Boston Bruins stated on November 19 that Jim Montgomery has been fired from his position as Head Coach. Assistant Coach Joe Sacco will take on temporary head coaching responsibilities. Montgomery has been the team’s Head Coach since July 1, 2022.
Statement from General Manager Don Sweeney
“Today, I made a very difficult decision with regards to a coaching change. Jim Montgomery is a very good NHL coach and an even better person. He has made a positive impact throughout the Bruins organization, and I am both grateful and appreciative of the opportunity to work with him and learn from him. Jim’s accomplishments as the Bruins head coach include a record-breaking and historic season, and I want to thank his entire family and wish him, Emily, J.P., Colin, Ava and Olivia all the success and happiness with their next opportunity. Our team’s inconsistency and performance in the first 20 games of the 2024-25 season has been concerning and below how the Bruins want to reward our fans. I believe Joe Sacco has the coaching experience to bring the players and the team back to focusing on the consistent effort the NHL requires to have success. We will continue to work to make the necessary adjustments to meet the standard and performance our supportive fans expect.”
Statement from President Cam Neely
“On behalf of the Boston Bruins, we thank Jim Montgomery for his accomplishments and impact on our organization. Jim’s open and honest communication with players, staff and management, as well as the positive attitude that he brought to the rink every day, helped lead our franchise to several on-ice accolades, including a historic 65-win season in 2022-23. We wish Jim and his family the best moving forward both personally and professionally. I’m supportive of Don’s decision to address our current play and performance. Joe Sacco has a wealth of experience and knowledge of our roster and can help lead our team in the right direction. He has a strong understanding of our standards and expectations, and I trust he will do all he can to accomplish our organization’s goals this season.”
Sacco has been behind the Bruins bench for 11 seasons, most recently as Associate Coach. He used to be the Assistant Coach from 2014-24.
Prior to becoming part of the Bruins team, Sacco worked as an Assistant Coach for the Buffalo Sabres in 2013-14, and as Head Coach for the Colorado Avalanche from 2009-13, achieving a total record of 130-134-40.
In 2010, he was nominated for the Jack Adams Award, which is awarded to the coach who has had the biggest impact on his team’s success, after guiding the Avalanche to a 43-30-9 record in his debut season.
Sacco had various coaching roles in the American Hockey League (AHL) from 2004-09, including stints with the Lake Erie Monsters, Albany River Rats, and Lowell Lock Monsters.
