Belichick to Jaguars? 2025 rumors heat up!
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick hasn’t revealed if he plans to return to the NFL for the 2025 season. However, if he does make a comeback, one job might be the most appealing to him.
The 72-year-old parted ways with the Patriots after the 2023 season. Despite leading the team to six Super Bowl titles, the split was less than amicable. Many speculate he harbors a grudge against the organization, although that remains unconfirmed.
There’s growing speculation that Bill Belichick could re-enter the AFC in fall 2025.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic shared insights suggesting that Belichick might be eyeing the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach position.
“Let’s get into this because there’s a lot of chatter about Bill Belichick taking that job,” Russini said. “I can tell you that Belichick certainly has his eye on this Jacksonville opening. This is an organization that has tons of respect for Belichick. They’ve got a good relationship already.”
The Jaguars are reportedly considering firing head coach Doug Pederson within the next two months. In fact, some fans thought his dismissal was imminent after their blowout loss to the Detroit Lions last weekend.
Earlier this week, rumors surfaced about Jacksonville being a realistic destination for Bill Belichick. With changes looming in the Jaguars’ leadership, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio reported that some in the league believe general manager Trent Baalke might retain his position as part of a package deal with Belichick.
The two previously worked together on the New York Jets in 1998 and 1999, where Belichick served as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, while Baalke was a scout.
Russini later clarified that while Jacksonville is a “potential destination” for Belichick, a partnership with Baalke seems unlikely. On her Scoop City podcast, she reiterated, “Belichick certainly has his eye on the Jacksonville opening.”
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer added that Belichick would consider the Jaguars but only under certain conditions.
“I think Bill Belichick will listen, given his relationship with Shad Khan’s son, Tony, as long as he can set it up the way he wants,” Breer explained.
“I think some bright, young offensive coaches, like Lions OC Ben Johnson, could be lured by the chance to do for [Trevor] Lawrence what Sean McVay did for Matthew Stafford after Stafford was the victim of such mismanagement in Detroit. I think the Jags legitimately have a solid job to sell here.
“But that’s only so if they reset in the front office, the same way they will on the coaching staff.”
During his Patriots tenure, Belichick served as both head coach and de facto general manager, controlling all personnel decisions.
While his recent choices led to playoff misses since 2021, his six Super Bowl wins make him an attractive candidate for teams in need of a leader—especially a franchise like Jacksonville, eager to turn things around.
Unlike some rebuilding teams, the Jaguars already have a talented quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. The 25-year-old, known for his stellar college career at Clemson, has shown flashes of brilliance in the NFL. While he hasn’t consistently replicated his collegiate success, his career stats—13,744 passing yards, 69 touchdowns, and 45 interceptions with a 63.4% completion rate—demonstrate his potential.
If Belichick takes the job, it’ll be interesting to see who he brings on board to shape the team. Familiar faces like Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia, and Joe Judge could return, though their reputations might make some teams hesitant.
Ultimately, Belichick’s next move could be one of the offseason’s biggest stories. Even with the Jaguars’ recent struggles, certain aspects of the team could appeal to the legendary coach.
