Neymar Injury Update: Could the Brazilian Still Play in the World Cup 2026?

Neymar’s long battle with injuries has entered another difficult phase. The Brazilian forward has undergone further knee surgery shortly after the domestic season with Santos concluded. The procedure comes after months of managing pain as Neymar tried to maintain continuity at club level. It raised fresh questions about his physical condition and long-term ambitions.

The 33-year-old finished the campaign with Santos carrying a knee problem that increasingly limited his availability. Despite that, he remained influential during the closing weeks. He helped the club steer clear of relegation from Brazil’s top flight. That sacrifice ultimately led to a medical decision. It aims at addressing the issue fully rather than continuing with conservative treatment.

Surgery and Recovery Plan for Neymar

Santos confirmed that Neymar underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a lesion in the medial meniscus. The operation was performed by Rodrigo Lasmar, who is also part of Brazil’s national team medical staff. He has previously overseen Neymar’s rehabilitation from both a foot fracture and the anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in 2023.

In a club statement, Santos said: “The surgery was a success and the athlete is doing well.” They added that Neymar will now begin a structured rehabilitation programme under close supervision. The procedure was described as minimally invasive. It only targeted issues inside the joint rather than structural ligament damage.

Before the operation, Neymar acknowledged how difficult the final stretch of the season had been. Speaking after Santos avoided relaxation, Neymar said, “These have been tough weeks for me. I thank those who were with me to lift me up. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have played these matches because of these injuries, this knee problem. I need to rest and then we will have this knee surgery.”

The International Picture Remains Open

Early expectations suggest that his absence may be measured in weeks rather than months. Return date toward the end of January or early February is possible, depending on his response to rehabilitation. Beyond club football, the timing of the surgery has clear international significance. Neymar has not represented Brazil for over two years.

And he is still working his way back after the ACL rupture that disrupted his career trajectory. Nevertheless, the successful operation has revived optimism that he could still put himself in contention ahead of the World Cup 2026. Neymar has made no secret of his ambitions. At a public event in Sao Paulo, he said:

“We will do the impossible to bring this cup to Brazil.” He then added a direct appeal, saying, “Hi, Ancelotti, helps us out!” Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has so far remained cautious. He has stressed that selection will be based on form and fitness closer to the tournament. Santos are reportedly in talks to extend his contract, so Neymar could very well still be in contention.
