Domantas Sabonis is a Lithuanian professional basketball player who plays for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born on May 10, 1996, in Portland, Oregon, to legendary Lithuanian basketball player Arvydas Sabonis and his wife, Ingrida Mikelionytė, a former Miss Lithuania, Domantas grew up surrounded by basketball royalty. His father’s illustrious career, which included an induction into the NBA Hall of Fame and an Olympic gold medal, undoubtedly influenced Domantas’ path to professional basketball.
Sabonis began his basketball journey in Europe, playing for Unicaja Málaga in Spain. He honed his skills in the youth system before making his senior team debut in 2013 at just 17 years old. During his time in Spain, he showcased his potential as a versatile big man, capable of scoring, rebounding, and passing.
In 2014, Sabonis made the significant decision to move to the United States to play college basketball for Gonzaga University. Despite being a highly touted international prospect, he chose Gonzaga to further refine his game and prepare for the NBA. In his freshman season (2014-2015), he quickly became a pivotal contributor for the Bulldogs, averaging 9.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Domantas Sabonis declared for the NBA draft after his second season at Gonzaga. He was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic but was immediately traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a package for Serge Ibaka. His rookie season with the Thunder saw him primarily play as a power forward, often starting alongside Russell Westbrook. He averaged 5.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in 81 games, including 66 starts.
After one season with the Thunder, Sabonis was part of another significant trade. In July 2017, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers along with Victor Oladipo in exchange for Paul George. This move proved to be a turning point in his career. With the Pacers, Sabonis began to flourish, showcasing his exceptional passing, rebounding, and interior scoring abilities. In February 2022, Sabonis was traded again, this time to the Sacramento Kings in a blockbuster deal that sent Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield to the Pacers. Upon joining the Kings, Sabonis immediately made an impact, bringing his unique blend of skills to a young and exciting roster. His ability to facilitate the offense from the post, grab crucial rebounds, and score efficiently made him an integral part of the Kings’ resurgence.
