After the Chiefs lost against the Eagles in the Super Bowl, the NFL offseason has officially begun. There are already multiple teams that are ready to make a move and improve their current roster. We know for a fact that Tee Higgins (WR for the Bengals) and Sam Darnold’s (QB for the Vikings) futures are in question. Both the teams have to decide and make a bold move soon. We also have the Miami Dolphins, who have already released multiple players from their roster.

The Miami Dolphins struggled last season, to win games. They were below .500 winning only 8 but losing 9 regular season matches. Their O-Line needs a big change and so does their linebackers and safety.

They have arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL in Tyreek Hill, and also a decent quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa. Despite their talent the Dolphins missed the playoffs entirely last season and were knocked out of the 2022 and 2023 wildcard rounds. They need to make a change soon enough because their star receiver has already grown tired of not having success in the playoffs.

So the Dolphins have waived three players off their roster and are being very aggressive in the off-season so far. Who are they and why did the Dolphins release them? Let’s find out.

Which Dolphins’ players were released?

RB Raheem Mostert, TE Durham Smythe, and CB Kendall Fuller have been waived from the Dolphins so far.

Kendall Fuller was released because he only played in 11 games last season and had 3 different injuries, with 2 concussions, and a knee problem which put him in the injured list for the rest of the season.

Durham Smythe went from playing 76 percent of his snaps to only 32 percent in the 2024 season. More importantly Smythe was moved to play a secondary role in 2024 after the arrival Jonnu Smith. This resulted in Smythe having only 9 receptions and 53 rushing yards. Smythe’s contract has also expired with the Dolphins and will be looking to play elsewhere next season.

Raheem Mostert had a brutal season with the Dolphins this past season. He only finished with 278 rushing yards, and 2 touchdowns but he also only started in a single game primarily due to their decision of starting De’Von Achane over him. He had an amazing season in 2023 with the Dolphins, finishing with 1012 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Now the 32 year old will look to take his talents elsewhere.

Why were they released?

The Dolphins released the three players prior to 1st June, 2025. This will save them a total of $7.8 million ($2.9 million for Mostert, $2.2 million for Smythe, and $2.7 million for Fuller) against the salary cap. The team will also be carrying $5.4 million of dead money for Fuller, who had just previously signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins in 2024.

These moves will give the Dolphins some flexibility to acquire some talent from the market which they are in desperate need of.
