Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez could be facing one of the biggest disciplinary calls of his MLS career after a shocking incident in the Leagues Cup final. During Inter Miami’s 3-0 defeat to Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field, Luis Suarez appeared to spit on Sounders Head of Security Gene Ramirez in the middle of a post-match melee.
The incident occurred seconds after the final whistle, when tempers boiled over as players from both sides clashed. Broadcast footage and multiple fan videos appeared to show Suarez first stepping on Ramirez’s foot. The Uruguayan then leaned in to spit in Ramirez’s face. Security and Sounders staff quickly intervened to pull Ramirez away.

Luis Suarez has a notorious disciplinary record, including the infamous bites on Branislav Ivanovic in 2013 and Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup, the latter of which earned him a four-month ban from football. While spitting is not new to MLS disciplinary cases, the high-profile nature of this incident may force the league to impose a heavy sanction.

Under the MLS Collective Bargaining Agreement, misconduct that occurs “at, during, or in connection with any game or tournament” falls under the jurisdiction of the league’s Disciplinary Committee. That committee, composed of five members (including two former players), can levy suspensions beyond two games. If the punishment exceeds that threshold, the MLS Players Association can appeal in writing to the commissioner.
In the past four years, MLS has seen several spitting incidents, with most cases leading to 2–3 game suspensions along with fines. For Luis Suarez, since the incident happened in the Leagues Cup, MLS could still step in, and he may be looking at a two-game suspension.

The Herons’ next league match is scheduled for September 16 against none other than the Seattle Sounders in Miami. As a result, fans can brace themselves for a fiery rematch where emotions will undoubtedly still be raw. Whether Suarez takes the field that day, however, is a decision MLS will need to take in the coming week.
