Utah capitalized on their initial power play opportunity. At 17:48 of the first period, Cooley scored his fourth goal of the season by tipping in Dylan Guenther’s shot from the left circle, which was passed by Mikhail Sergachev. The interference penalty was called on Toronto’s Jake McCabe. At 5:15 of the second period, a long pass from John Tavares led to a breakaway goal by Marner.
During Sergachev’s penalty for tripping, Marner scored his eighth goal of the season at 9:34 of the second period on a power play, deflecting a sharp-angled shot off Vejmelka.
Nylander netted his 14th goal at 10:50 of the second period following a successful breakaway puck win. He completed a backhand shot that defeated Vejmelka.
Toronto had a two-man advantage on the power play at 13:17 of the second period but failed to capitalize. At 1:51 of the third period, McBain scored his seventh goal of the season by redirecting Cooley’s shot.
Nicholas Robertson from Toronto made contact with the right post with a shot at 8:34 of the third period. At 13:19, Michael Carcone from Utah’s shot also struck the left post. Toronto added Alex Nylander, who is the brother of William, to the team, and he was playing on Sunday while Matthew Knies was placed on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury. Nylander began the season playing for the AHL Toronto Marlies.
