A pivotal match as Andreeva and Arango meet again in Rome.
The seventh-seeded Mirra Andreeva is set to face qualifier Emiliana Arango in the second round of the Italian Open.
The 18-year-old Andreeva has been on a tear this season, capturing back-to-back titles in Dubai and Indian Wells with statement wins over top-ranked veterans, including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Swiatek. While her highs have been headline-worthy, the season hasn’t been all smooth sailing. She opened strong with a semifinal run in Brisbane but followed with early exits in Melbourne and Doha. Since lifting her two singles titles, she hasn’t advanced past the round of 16, falling in Miami and Stuttgart before being upset by Coco Gauff in the Madrid quarterfinals.
Arango, on the other hand, has had a rocky 2025 season. She grabbed headlines with a WTA Challenger title in Cancun and a runner-up finish at the Merida Open in March, though that run ended harshly with a double bagel loss to Emma Navarro. That final marked just her fourth career WTA quarterfinal since turning pro in 2018. Outside of those highlights, she’s struggled to break past the round of 32.

Andreeva leads the head-to-head against Arango 1-0. Their first encounter came in the second round of the 2023 French Open qualifiers, where the young Russian cruised past the Colombian in straight sets. Now, as they meet again at the Italian Open, Andreeva, despite some inconsistency, enters as a formidable threat. Arango, meanwhile, will be looking to settle the score and flip the narrative in their young rivalry.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
| 2023 | French Open (Q) | Second Round | Mirra Andreeva | 6–0, 6–2 |
| Mirra Andreeva | Category | Emiliana Arango |
| 7 | Ranking | 97 |
| 133-40 | Career W-L | 221-164 |
| 24-6 | YTD W-L | 14-8 |
| 3 | Career Titles | 0 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 2 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Andreeva holds the edge with superior form and a previous win over Arango, but the Colombian has the tools to challenge. Expect a tight contest early, but Andreeva’s baseline consistency should carry her through.
Prediction: Mirra Andreeva in straight sets
Mirra Andreeva: 1/16
Emiliana Arango: 9/1
