Mirra Andreeva produced a gritty display to beat Clara Tauson of Denmark and enter the 2025 Internazionali BNL d’Italia quarterfinals on Monday. The Russian sensation, seeded 7th this week in Rome, came back from a set down to win 5-7 6-3 6-2 and set up a blockbuster clash against Coco Gauff. By virtue of this big win, Andreeva broke a huge WTA-1000 record at the Italian Open.

At the age of 18, young Andreeva is already one of the best players on the WTA circuit. The women’s doubles silver medalist from the 2024 Paris Olympics started the year in fine style – winning the Dubai Open and Indian Wells back-to-back. She also captured the doubles crown in Miami alongside Diana Shnaider. Under the potent guidance of Conchita Martinez, Andreeva is soaring to new highs with every passing tournament.

Mirra Andreeva Breaks WTA-1000 Quarterfinals Record

On Monday, Andreeva converted 5/7 break points en route to a comeback win over Tauson. The 2024 Roland Garros semifinalist improved her level in sets 2 and 3, ensuring that a quarterfinal entry was never in doubt. In the process, she became the youngest female player in the history of the game to reach seven quarterfinals in WTA-1000 events since the introduction of the category.

Additionally, the Russian prodigy is also the youngest player to reach her fourth WTA-1000 quarterfinal of the season – since Serena Williams in 1999. While the American carved out an awe-inspiring career for herself, there is no doubt that Andreeva is showing humongous promise to become the WTA’s next big thing.

Andreeva Set for Coco Gauff Rematch in Rome

After winning their respective Round of 16 clashes at Foro Italico, Mirra Andreeva and Coco Gauff have booked a monumental quarterfinal encounter. It happens to be a repeat of the Mutua Madrid Open QF from two weeks ago, which Gauff won in straight sets. She went on to reach the final at the Spanish capital, losing to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Andreeva trails the head to head against Gauff by 0-3. Nonetheless, the Russian has won two titles in 2025 in comparison to her 21-year-old counterpart who is chasing her first trophy of the season. However, the 2023 US Open champion is no pushover on the red dirt – former World No. 1 Andy Roddick recently claimed that clay might be Gauff’s best surface considering her level of play.
