Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys have until Tuesday to sort things out
A few days after the end of the NFL regular season, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are set to begin discussions with Mike McCarthy about his future.
Despite a challenging season marked by a failure to qualify for the playoffs and a third-place finish in the NFC East, Mike McCarthy could remain in his role for the 2025 season.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that discussions between the two parties have started. However, McCarthy is only one part of a broader negotiation, as the entire Cowboys coaching staff is free to leave.
Mike McCarthy’s contract expires next Tuesday, leaving the Cowboys’ management only a few days to reach an exclusive agreement.
Until Tuesday, Dallas has the right to deny any interview requests from other franchises, as was the case with the Chicago Bears.
The Bears are currently the only team to have publicly expressed interest in Mike McCarthy. If no agreement is reached by next Tuesday, the Cowboys’ head coach will be free to negotiate with any interested franchise.
Mike McCarthy, 61, has a record of 49-35 over his five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, though his postseason record stands at 1-3. After three consecutive 12-5 seasons, the Cowboys endured a disappointing 2024 season, finishing with a 7-10 record.
Throughout his career, McCarthy boasts a regular-season record of 174-112-2 and an 11-11 mark in the playoffs, which includes his 13 years as head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
