Merab Dvalishvili Puts On A Masterclass Against Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311, Retains Title With Style Points!

Zaid Quraishi

Merab Dvalishvili delivers a dominant performance over Umar Nurmagomedov, retaining his title with a stylish, commanding victory!

The Nurmagomedov name has been synonymous with dominance in mixed martial arts for years. Khabib Nurmagomedov’s perfect 29-0 record, his cousin Usman’s undefeated streak in PFL, and Umar’s rising star had created an aura of invincibility around the family.

But on Saturday night at UFC 311, that mystique took its first hit. Reigning Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili handed Umar Nurmagomedov his first professional loss. And he did this in style. The matchup had all the makings of a classic showdown. In one corner stood the unstoppable force of the Nurmagomedov wrestling dynasty. On the other, a Georgian warrior who’d earned his “Machine” nickname through relentless pressure and seemingly endless cardio.

UFC 311 Fight Summary: Merab Dvalishvili vs. Umar Nurmagomedov

What unfolded in the Intuit Dome was a masterclass in championship mentality. The early rounds saw both fighters testing each other, with Umar Nurmagomedov landing crisp shots that were penetrating the champion’s defense. Dvalishvili responded with his signature pressure. Umar’s takedown defense initially seemed impenetrable, living up to his family’s grappling reputation.

However, as the rounds wore on, Merab Dvalishvili’s experience in five-round wars began to show. His relentless pace, even with a leg infection and back issues he later revealed, slowly wore down the challenger. By the championship rounds, the young Nurmagomedov’s sharp striking started losing its sting while Dvalishvili kept charging forward like the cardio machine he is.

During the entire fight, Dvalishvili smiled, even when he was rocked. His antics kept increasing as he continued to showboat during the fight. Even when Umar Nurmagomedov took him down, the Georgian was all smiles. By the end of the fight, the champion was confident in his victory and started emoting left and right.

When the final bell rang, Dvallishvili’s hand was raised, with all the judges giving him the nod.The most impressive part? Merab managed to break Georges St-Pierre’s record for most takedowns in UFC history, hitting number 91 during the fight.

The victory wasn’t just about breaking the Nurmagomedov family’s undefeated streak, though that certainly adds a fascinating chapter to UFC history. It was about proving that sometimes, sheer determination and heart can overcome even the most technically gifted opponents!
