The Playoffs News Team

Clay Court Test for Potapova and Kostyuk

Marta Kostyuk and Anastasia Potapova are set to meet at the round of 16 of the Madrid Open, in Madrid, Spain. The 24th-seeded Kostyuk received a first-round bye and battled through three-set wins over Emma Raducanu and Veronika Kudermetova in the second and third rounds, respectively.

On the other side, Potapova started with a comeback win over Ashlyn Krueger in the first round. Followed by a straight-sets victory against Qinwen Zheng in the second. She then edged past Sofia Kenin in a hard-fought three-set battle in the third round to reach the round of 16.

Marta Kostyuk vs. Anastasia Potapova Head-to-Head Record

Anastasia Potapova is leading the head-to-head against Marta Kostyuk by a record of 2-1. Their rivalry began in 2023 at the Miami Open second round, where Potapova established her dominance with a straight-sets win. Later that season, in the round of 32 tie of the Birmingham Open, Potapova edged out Kostyuk in a thrilling three-set battle.

However, Potapova’s winning streak came to an end the following year, as Kostyuk turned the tables with a straight-sets win at the Indian Wells quarterfinals. Notably, she bageled Potapova in the opening set, and while the Russian put up a stronger fight in the second, it wasn’t enough to stop the Ukrainian from securing the win.

Marta Kostyuk vs. Anastasia Potapova Prediction

Kostyuk hasn’t quite hit her stride this season, with her best result coming at the Qatar Open, where she made the quarterfinals before falling to Amanda Anisimova in three sets. She was a strong contender for the Stuttgart Open, having reached the final there last year, but a wrist injury during the Billie Jean King Cup forced her to withdraw.

Potapova, on the other hand, has enjoyed a steadier run, winning the Transylvania Open, reaching the quarterfinals in Linz, and finishing runner-up at the Winners Open. While her form dipped with early exits in later tournaments, she did make the round of 16 in Stuttgart before also pulling out due to a wrist injury.

Overall, Potapova has been more consistent this year and may have a slight edge going into this match. Besides her recent form, Potapova’s game is also better suited to clay, as seen in her 2022 Istanbul Cup win, thanks to her topspin-heavy shots, solid footwork, and baseline patience. In contrast, Kostyuk, still seeking her first title on clay, plays a more aggressive, first-strike style that favors faster hard courts.

Prediction: Anastasia Potapova in straight sets
