Manchester United vs. Lyon Europa League – Injury News, Match Preview and Predicted Line-Ups

Abhinav Goel

Manchester United currently sit 14th in Premier League, with their Europa League campaign being their last hope of securing a European spot.

Manchester United and Lyon meet again on Thursday night for the decisive second leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford. United were denied a first-leg advantage in Lyon last week as they conceded a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw. The Red Devils suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League. That result leaves them winless in their last four matches heading into the crucial second leg.

On the other hand, Lyon come into the game in strong form, having secured a 3-1 win over Auxerre to make it seven victories in their last nine matches across all competitions. Paulo Fonseca’s side have also been impressive on the road, winning four of their last five away matches.

With the tie finely balanced, both sides will be aiming to gain the upper hand and book their place in the semi-finals. The winner will go on to face either Rangers or Athletic Bilbao in the semis.

Manchester United Injury News

Manchester United continue to struggle with injury concerns. Lisandro Martinez (knee), Matthijs de Ligt (ankle), Amad Diallo, Ayden Heaven (both ankle), and Jonny Evans (back) all remain unavailable. The under-fire Andre Onana is expected to return to the starting lineup after missing the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle. Manchester United currently sit 14th in Premier League, with their Europa League campaign being their last hope of securing a European spot.

United have been dealt another blow with Joshua Zirkzee ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in the match against Newcastle. However, there is some positive news for the Red Devils, as defender Jonny Evans and goalkeeper Tom Heaton returned to training on Wednesday. Rasmus Hojlund is Amorim’s only fit striker for the second leg, and he is expected to be supported by captain Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.

Lyon Injury News

Lyon will be without winger Ernest Nuamah for the remainder of the season after he suffered an ACL injury earlier this month. Malick Fofana is also unavailable due to a knee issue. In Nuamah’s absence, Rayan Cherki has stepped up impressively. Cherki has been in outstanding form this season, scoring eleven goals and getting 18 assists in 36 appearances this season. He is expected to line up alongside Thiago Almada and either Alexandre Lacazette or Georges Mikautadze in Lyon’s attack.
