Current World No. 11 Lorenzo Musetti delivered a rollicking performance to dominate Alex de Minaur 6-4 6-2 in the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open Round of 16 on Wednesday. The Italian starlet converted 7 out of 10 break points en route to improve his head to head against ‘Demon’ to 3-1. In the process, Musetti has made some incredible history for his country and cemented his place as Italy’s headliner alongside Jannik Sinner.

Musetti needed just 1 hour and 23 minutes to earn an authoritative victory over an in-form de Minaur. A couple of weeks ago, Musetti reached his maiden ATP Masters-1000 summit clash at the Principality. Unfortunately, he fell short against Carlos Alcaraz after claiming the opener in Monte Carlo. The 23-year-old is no stranger to excelling on the red dirt – Musetti currently holds the bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Musetti Makes More History at the Spanish Capital

By virtue of his humongous Round of 16 win, Lorenzo Musetti has ensured that he will enter the ATP Top-10 for the first time in his career next week. According to the current PIF ATP Live Rankings, Musetti stands at No. 9 presently. The only two players who can potentially pass the two-time Tour-level title winner are Casper Ruud and Daniil Medvedev – who will face each other in the last eight – thus ensuring that only one of them can overhaul the No. 10 seed.

On Monday, Musetti will become just the sixth Italian player since 1973 to break into the Top-10 of the rankings. The list includes Adriano Panatta (1973), Corrado Barazzutti (1978), Fabio Fognini (2019), Matteo Berrettini (2019) and Jannik Sinner (2021). Counting Lorenzo Musetti, four out of these six players are still active on the men’s circuit.

‘Surprised With Myself’: Musetti

Musetti evaluated his performance after reaching his second quarterfinal of the month. “I’m not surprised [to enter the QFs], I’m surprised with myself,” he said. “After Monte Carlo, something changed in myself – a positive click forward.” Musetti’s victories at the Monaco-based event came against the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur himself. After withdrawing from the Barcelona Open due to some discomfort, he has bounced back in fine fashion

“This is something I have been waiting for for a long time. I feel more secure on what I have to do on the court. Of course I can lose, but I have the attitude and mentality of a Top-10 [player] right now, so I’m really happy about that.” Tuscany’s very own superstar will face lucky loser Gabriel Diallo on Thursday for a spot in the semifinals.
