A 52-yard field goal chance with the game on the line- the stakes were high for the Lions vs. Texans game. And hometown hero Jake Bates proved it again that he can handle pressure on the biggest stage.
This is the second time in this NFL season that Bates was put to test and he passed with flying colors. We couldn’t get enough of the 44-yard game-winning FG against the Vikings. And in the Lions vs. Texans game, Bates gave us not one, but 2 spectacular field goals, i.e. first one for 58-yard and second for 52.
Jake Bates also made NFL history as he became the first kicker to have a 55+ yards game-tying FG and 50+ yards game-winning FG in the 4th quarter of the same game. Bates’ 58-yard FG is also tied for the third longest in franchise history. He became the third kicker after Jason Hanson and Matt Prater in Lions’ history to connect multiple 52+ yards FG in the same game.
The Lions had their backs against the wall in the first half as C. J. Stroud and the Texans were going full throttle. Down by 16 coming into the third quarter, Lions HC Dan Campbell called for one play at a time and his boys obliged.
The second half belonged to the Detroit Lions as they scored 19 unanswered points, with both the defense and offense coming through. This will go down as a defining win for the Lions as many counted them out of the game. But Jared Goff and co. came back in a spectacular fashion to take this one from the Texans and go 8-1 through week 10.
Jared Goff had a good second half as the Lions fought their way back to a gritty win. But Goff’s throw was picked 5 times in the game vs. the Texans. In the 8 games prior, Goff had only 4 interceptions. The Lions QB finished the night with 240 passing yards for 2 touchdowns.
Jim Hardy holds the record for most interceptions thrown in an NFL game. The Chicago Cardinals QB threw 8 interceptions to the Philadelphia Eagles, a game dated back to September 24, 1950.
