La Liga: Espanyol vs. Atletico Madrid – Injury News, Injury Update, Predicted Lineups and More

Abhinav Goel

Atletico Madrid find themselves in a difficult patch, having suffered a string of disappointing results in recent weeks.

Espanyol welcome Atletico Madrid to the RCDE Stadium on Saturday afternoon for Matchday 29 of La Liga. Espanyol currently find themselves in a spot of bother, sitting 15th in the La Liga table and only one point clear of the relegation zone. With the pressure mounting and just a handful of games remaining, every point will pe precious for the Catalan club.

Atletico Madrid find themselves in a difficult patch too, having suffered a string of disappointing results in recent weeks. In their last La Liga outing, they let a two-goal lead slip against Barcelona, ultimately falling to a disappointing 4-2 defeat. The collapse came in the final 20 minutes, marking their second consecutive league loss following a 2-1 defeat to Getafe on March 9. These setbacks have left Atletico in third place in La Liga, trailing Barcelona by seven points.

Adding to their troubles, Diego Simeone’s side were also knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by city rivals Real Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Espanyol Injury News

The Espanyol squad is dealing with a number of injury concerns, with Fernando Pacheco, Jose Gragera, Pablo Ramon, and Alvaro Tejero all ruled out due to ongoing fitness issues. The home team will be boosted by the return of Pol Lozano, who is back in contention after serving a suspension. The midfielder is expected to slot straight back into the starting lineup for this weekend’s crucial clash.

Aside from Lozano’s likely inclusion, head coach Manolo Gonzalez is expected to stick with a similar lineup to the one that started against Mallorca.

Atletico Madrid Injury News

Atletico Madrid will be without Angel Correa, who continues to serve a suspension, while midfielder Koke is a doubt due to a muscle issue. Aside from those concerns, Diego Simeone’s squad is largely at full strength heading into their weekend visit to Espanyol.

However, Simeone is expected to rotate his lineup. Players such as Conor Gallagher, Nahuel Molina, Javi Galan, and Jose Gimenez are all in contention for a return to the starting XI. Julian Alvarez, who has been in sensational form this season with 23 goals and five assists in 44 games, would usually be a guaranteed starter. However, with a crucial clash against Barcelona looming next week, Simeone may opt to rest both Alvarez and Rodrigo De Paul to keep them fresh for the bigger challenge ahead.

Espanyol probable starting lineup:

J Garcia; El Hilali, Kumbulla, Cabrera, Romero; Carreras, Lozano, Gonzalez, J Puado; Kral, Fernandez

Atletico Madrid probable starting lineup:

Oblak; Molina, Le Normand, Gimenez, Galan; Simeone, De Paul, Barrios, Gallagher; Alvarez, Griezmann
