Fresh off a dramatic Champions League Round of 16 triumph against rivals Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid players have been handed a surprise gesture of appreciation from club president Florentino Perez. With the tie levelled early by Conor Gallagher’s strike just 27 seconds into the game, neither side could find a winner in regulation or extra time. That sent the match into penalties, where Real Madrid players kept their cool and managed a 4-2 penalty shootout victory.

The defining moment of the match came during the shootout when Atletico’s Julian Alvarez saw his penalty disallowed due to an unintentional double touch. The reigning champions now set their sights on a quarter-final showdown with Arsenal, as they continue their march toward what would be a record-extending 16th Champions League title.

Real Madrid Players Handed €250K Bonus

In the aftermath of Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph, club president Florentino Perez made sure the efforts of his players did not go unrecognised. Perez was delighted with Real Madrid’s success and responded by gifting a special reward to the squad. According to a report from COPE, each member of the Real Madrid squad was handed a €250,000 bonus as a reward for eliminating their fierce rivals from Champions League. The report added that the players could earn more bonuses if they went on to lift the FIFA Club World Cup later this year.

Despite their impressive Round of 16 heroics, Los Blancos have endured an inconsistent campaign in Europe. They only just managed to scrape through the league phase, finishing 11th overall in the new league-stage format of the Champions League. However, the Spanish giants breezed past Manchester City in the playoff round with a 6-3 aggregate victory.

Barcelona currently sit at top of the La Liga table with 60 points. Real Madrid are also level on 60 points but Los Blancos have played one more game. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid remain in close pursuit with 56 points.
