The 2024-25 season has been nothing short of a disaster for Dallas sports fans. It feels like the city just can’t catch a break. The Cowboys had a brutal run in the NFL, failing to make the playoffs. And now, it seems the Dallas Mavericks are heading down a similar path.

Just last month, the Mavs took a gut-punch with Luka Doncic getting traded to the Lakers. Fans were still hurting from that heartbreak when, to make things worse, the list of Mavs players getting hurt just kept growing. Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, Dwight Powell, PJ Washington, Jaden Hardy, and Dante Exum – each one has seen their season derailed by injuries.

But the one player who seemed to be holding the team together was Kyrie Irving. With Luka gone, all eyes were on Irving to carry the load. He did for most part, but now, the unthinkable has happened.

In Monday’s game against the Kings, Irving went down with what looks like a potential season-ending injury. The tears that rolled down his face as he stepped to the foul line weren’t just from the pain. They were more from the realization that his – and the Mavs’- season is likely over.

Dallas Mavericks’ playoff odds drop further with Kyrie Irving’s injury

The Mavs’ playoff chances were already down to 45% after trading away Doncic, and now, after Kyrie’s injury, those odds have dropped to 18%, according to Polymarket Sports. It’s a far cry from where they were just a year ago, when they were in the NBA Finals, dreaming of a championship.

The Mavericks are currently sitting 12th in the Western Conference with a 32-30 record. It’s not the worst position, but it certainly feels like the end is near. Their remaining schedule doesn’t look too difficult on paper, but that’s only if you ignore the fact that the squad, without Irving, is simply not deep enough to compete. The injuries have taken their toll, and now the Mavs find themselves in a tough spot.

What’s left for Dallas? They have seen their franchise face leave, their veteran star go down with injury, and now, they are staring down a likely playoff miss. It’s a far cry from the championship aspirations that were once within reach just a year ago.

This has been one nightmare of a season for Dallas sports, and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to get any better.

For the Mavericks, the hope now is just to somehow salvage what’s left of this lost season. But with the way things are going, that hope feels like a distant dream.
