Khabib Nurmagomedov or Islam Makhachev – Javier Mendez Chooses His More Obedient Student!

Khabib Nurmagomedov is looked at as one of the greatest UFC fighters and lightweights of all time. Everybody remembers him for famously making Conor McGregor tap out and after getting defeated by the Russian, McGregor was never the same again. In his MMA career, Nurmagomedov remained undefeated throughout and maintained a perfect record of 29-0-0. He was one of the most terrifying submission specialists and grappler we have ever seen, winning 11 bouts by making his opponents tap. There is no questioning his greatness, and had he decided to remain in the UFC, who knows how far he could have gone.

Similarly, Khabib’s training partner and fellow Dagestani, Islam Makhachev has taken over the UFC and has nearly won all of his fights. The two are not brothers but they trained under Khabib’s late father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Makhachev has gathered an overall record of 27-1-0 and is also an excellent grappler and a wrestler. He’s won 13 of his fights via submission and has won 4 straight title defense fights so far.

Recently, Islam and Khabib’s coach and mentor Javier Mendez picked the more disciplined and coachable fighter between the two. Let us find out more.

Javier Mendez Picks Makhachev As the Better Student

Javier Mendez recently revealed that Makhachev is a much better student of the game and adjusts to what the coach’s game plan is. Whereas when it comes Nurmagomedov, Mendez says it was more 50-50. Here is what Mendez said:

“The thing about Islam like I’ve always said, he can change on a dime. Basically we can change him minute for minute, round for round, second per second. He’s that good. He can change and adapt.” When Mendez gets asked about if Islam is changes his plans if the coaches ask him to, he said “He’s done it all the time. No he’s not a Khabib type. Khabib is 50-50 with me. Islam has always been a 100% on point. Whenever I ask him, or Khabib ask him, or Magomed, or Seif Seifulla, the other coach ask him, he does it… He’s done what we’ve asked him to do. I’ve never not asked him to do something and he didn’t go out and do it. He’s always done it.”

When Mendez gets asked about if Makhachev is a good student, he replied “He’s a great student, not a good student… He listens to all his coaches.”

Even though Makhachev may be a great student and has created a legacy of his own in the UFC and the MMA world, we cannot argue with results and Khabib retired as the undisputed lightweight champ of the UFC. We also need to remember that Makhachev lost a fight in the early stages of his UFC career against Adriano Martins.

There are reports suggesting that Javier Mendez made Islam fight by staying on his feet and not do what he does best, which is submission and grappling. So even if Khabib did not listen to his coaches, to the extent that Islam does, he clearly knew what he was doing when he was in the octagon. After all, you don’t go 29-0-0 without learning how to adjust things on the fly.
