Manchester United’s season went from bad to worse following their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEL 2024/25. Dropping points in 12 home games in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim led United to a season to forget among the fans.

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho having strong links with both Tottenham and Manchester United expressed his feelings on the UEL finals. The Portuguese manager also said that Manchester United supporting Amorin despite the season is a good sign.

Mourinho’s Divided Loyalty Between Tottenham and Manchester United

Mourinho who managed both the finalists of the UEL 2024/25 campaign said he was caught in two minds watching the game. Talking about being stuck on who to root for in the finals, Mourinho in his latest Sky Sports interview said,

“I was divided because on one side I love United and I have a fantastic relationship with Ruben. But on the other side, I saw Sonny crying with the cup also for Tottenham fans it was a special feeling.”

Tottenham who lifted their first trophy in 17 years were congratulated by the entire football world. With Heung Min-son leading the lines over the past decade, many argue the winger finally caught the fruit of his loyalty Mourinho would also agree.

Mourinho’s Personal Experience and Parallels with Ruben Amorim’s Tenure

Manchester United had one of the worst seasons in their history under Ruben Amorin. Having lost 18 games in the Premier League this season, the Red Devils finished 15th on the table.

Speaking on the tough season and his countryman Amorim, Mourniho praised Manchester United’s patience to hold on to the Portuguese manager. Suggesting that the board is willing to give Amorin the time and conditions, Mourinho in his interview added:

“From what I read, the impact on Manchester United is huge in the sense that Manchester United are not involved in any European competition. But at the same time, it looks like they’re supporting Ruben, they’re giving him time and conditions to go forward,”

Mourinho also related Amorin’s situation to his earlier days with FC Porto. Suggesting that it took him a few months to settle in at Porto but everyone knows what happened next, Mourinho in his interview said,

“I read some quotes from him saying that he’s happy he’s come and had these six months already. When I went to Porto, the same happened to me. I went in January, had a difficult six months, we were struggling to even qualify for UEFA Cup, and then what happened happened,”

Manchester United after a forgetful season will look to strengthen their squad in the transfer window. With some players speculated to depart from the club, Amorim might also have to fill in the voids required for the squad’s depth.

Amorim also apologised for the season to fans on the final day of the Premier League. Talking about wanting to bounce back the next year, Amorim also suggested the change of tides as he thanked for the support. Moreover, with the recent signings of strikers failing to have an impact, Amorim might also pursue a big-money striker move this summer.
