Tatum scored 42 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in 40 minutes of action.Â
The Boston Celtics slumped to New York Knicks 121-113 in crucial Game 4, pushing them to a 1-3 hole in the best-of-seven series. However, it wasn’t the only blow they received as they lost their star player Jayson Tatum to a season-ending injury. The star forward was expected to undergo an MRI examination on Tuesday. However, per a late update from the franchise, Tatum was diagnosed with torn Achilles. He has already undergone a surgery to repair it.
With only three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Tatum lunged forward to reach out to the ball the Celtics had just turned out. However, the star forward went down on the court and clutched his lower right leg in visible pain. Tatum was taken to the locker room in a wheelchair, while he buried his face in his hands. Before leaving the game, Tatum put on a monstrous performance with 42 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in 40 minutes of action.

As per the official update by the Celtics, the 27-year-old ruptured his right Achilles tendon and has successfully undergone a surgery to repair it. The 18-time champions didn’t share any particular timeline for his return. The surgery has not only sidelined Tatum for the remainder of the ongoing season, but has also raised doubts over his availability in the forthcoming season. Tatum is expected to make full recovery, as per the Celtics, and the franchise will share further updates as and when appropriate.

Earlier, NBA insider Shams Charania shared, “The Boston Celtics are bracing for the worst around Jayson Tatum and that right foot. The Celtics since last night have been expecting a severe injury for Tatum.”
As per ESPN, no player in the league since Jose Juan Barea in 2019 has returned before a period of ten-and-a-half months after damaging their Achilles. It means that the Celtics as well as the fans should expect Tatum missing the entire 2025-26 regular season.
Ever since his debut in 2017, Tatum has made it to every playoff and won his first NBA title in 2024, when he led the Celtics to their 18th championship. Having played 121 playoff games in his career, the six-time NBA All-Star maintains an average of 24.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per contest.
He has not only played the most regular season and playoff games since entering into the league with 706 games, but also leads the franchise in total points, rebounds, and assists over the last two postseason campaigns. In the ongoing playoff season, Tatum averaged 28.1 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.4 assists across eight games.
