Who will leave New York as the World No. 1?
After World No. 1 Jannik Sinner dethroned him at the Wimbledon Championships earlier this year, Carlos Alcaraz will be seeking redemption on Sunday. With the trophy and No. 1 ranking on the line, the two best players in the world meet in the 2025 US Open final. Sinner is the defending champion in New York, having won last year’s event in brutally dominant fashion. On the other hand, Alcaraz is yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows in 2025. Who will come out on top?
The US Open 2025 final will be the fifth meeting between Sinner and Alcaraz this year – the Spaniard has a 3-1 record so far. When it comes to the overall head-to-head, Alcaraz has a convincing 9-5 advantage. It has been an extremely rewarding year for the 22-year-old – after losing in the QFs at the Australian Open, he has been on a roll. Winning six trophies this year and currently on a run of eight success tournaments where he has reached the final, the World No. 2 is on the brink of becoming the King of the ATP.

Meanwhile, Sinner started the year in typical fashion by retaining his crown in Melbourne Park. After serving a temporary suspension for three months, the Italian phenom returned like he had never left. He captured runner-up trophies in Rome and Paris, before producing a flawless display to become the new Wimbledon champion. At the recently concluded Cincinnati Masters, Sinner v Alcaraz was cut short due to an injury concern for the top seed. As a result, fans will be licking their lips as the premier rivalry of men’s tennis witnesses another epic night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The most crucial aspect which is at stake on Sunday, is the World No. 1 ranking. Sinner and Alcaraz are set to become the first men’s duo to contest three Grand Slam finals in the same season. But with double the prize money and ultimate bragging rights on the line, this clash brings slightly more spice than previous occasions. The last time they faced one another at the US Open in 2022, Alcaraz saved a match point en route to a thrilling five set win.

🔮 Prediction? pic.twitter.com/g9rvPHl46Y
With a victory in the final, Alcaraz would break Sinner’s 27-match unbeaten run at hard court majors. The Italian, meanwhile, is looking to become just the seventh man in the Open Era to win three or more Slams in the same season. In the process, he will naturally break Alcaraz’s 12-match winning streak and his run of 20 straight sets starting from Cincinnati. It would also mean that Sinner and Alcaraz will be tied on five Grand Slams each – something that the Spanish bull will be determined to prevent.
