A closer look at the season-defining rivalry shaping men’s tennis heading into Turin.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have moved the men’s game into an era defined by their duels, and ahead of the season-ending championship in Turin, the pair spoke with CNN’s Amanda Davies about their on-court rivalry and off-court friendship. With the world No. 1 ranking hanging in the balance and Sinner returning as defending champion, both players have already qualified for the semifinal of the ATP Finals 2025. While talking with Davies, they offered candid reflections on why this rivalry has become the sport’s defining storyline, how they navigate it, and what keeps it evolving as they chase the same goals.

"At this point in the season, have you had enough of each other?"
Carlos: "I'm seeing him more than my mom actually. But I never get tired of seeing him" 😭😭😭

This season, Sinner defended his Australian Open title in January, his last event before serving a suspension for failing two doping tests. What followed was a trilogy of major finals that tightened the gap between them. Alcaraz captured a landmark French Open, Sinner hit back with his first Wimbledon title, and the Spaniard answered again with a commanding US Open run. Their success has created a vacuum at the top of the sport, with Alcaraz already on six majors and Sinner holding four, while being as young as 22 and 24 years old, respectively.
Yet even as they push each other technically and physically, both insist that the rivalry holds a human dimension. “I think the word rivalry takes on the professional part, in the tennis side,” Alcaraz told Davies. “We’re trying to find the weaknesses from each other on court but then when we shake hands and we are off the court, we’re totally different. We sometimes forgot about the rivalry we were getting on tour and we became persons and that’s what it means, the word rivalry.”
“When you practice together, see each other in the locker, then it’s natural that you get to know each other better and better,” Sinner said. “You talk about family and life in general, sharing also some personal stuff. I don’t think it’s changed. It just has become better because we know each other better.”
CNN’s Davies asked whether, after a full season together at the summit, the two had finally reached their limit with one another. Alcaraz laughed it off. “I said in the summer, I’m seeing him more than my mom actually. I never get tired of seeing him.” Sinner followed with his own lighthearted twist, “You know, saying it’s good and bad. You it’s kind of both. But no, we are happy to see each other.”

As Turin prepares for another high-stakes chapter, the balance between competition and camaraderie remains the anchor of ‘Sincaraz.’ They continue to push each other, but they also reveal a rivalry strengthened, not strained, by genuine respect.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
