Draper vs. Moutet: Who Prevails in Rome's Round of 16?
Jack Draper will be locking horns with Corentin Moutet for the first time ever in the fourth round of the Italian Open. Fifth-seeded Draper received a first-round bye and breezed past Luciano Darderi and Vit Kopriva in straight sets to reach the fourth round.
Moutet, meanwhile, opened with a win over Rinky Hijikata and advanced when Ugo Humbert retired in the second round. In the third round, the Frenchman upset ninth seed Holger Rune in a marathon three-setter lasting 3 hours and 45 minutes, the fourth-longest match in Italian Open history, capped by a dramatic final-set tiebreak.
Draper has been on fire this season, racking up back-to-back finals appearances at Qatar and Indian Wells, where he triumphed over Holger Rune in straight sets to capture the title. Along the way, he knocked out some of the biggest names in tennis, including Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz.
Although his runs in Miami and Monte Carlo were cut short, not going past the round of 16 in either, Draper bounced back with another impressive finals appearance in Madrid. He was, however, defeated in a hard-fought three-set match by Casper Ruud. With a 19-5 record this year, the world No. 5 has proven himself to be a force, delivering 188 aces, winning 74% of first-serve points, and converting 41% of his break points.

Moutet turned pro in 2016 and had his best Australian Open finish this season, reaching the third round before being upset by Learner Tien in straight sets. Throughout the year, he failed to go beyond the round of 16, often exiting early in the round of 64.
His best result came with a quarterfinal run at Challenger Phoenix, where he lost to Alexander Bublik in three sets. Moutet’s season has been inconsistent, with a 63% first-serve points won rate. He saved 58% of 133 break points but converted only 33% of 108 opportunities.

With Draper’s solid form and impressive season so far, he enters as the favorite. Moutet’s inconsistency could make this matchup challenging for him, unless he finds his rhythm early.
