Islam Makhachev has come a long way from being known as ‘Khabib’s friend’ to becoming one of the most dominant champions in UFC history. The Dagestani powerhouse has been nearly untouchable in the octagon, creating a reign of terror in the lightweight division that reminds many of his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov’s dominance.

“I can’t announce it yet, but there is an offer that we need to sit down with the team and think about because there are options. We need to decide together what to do… There is an option in my weight class, and there is an offer from the UFC, but let’s wait for now.”

This kind of cryptic talk has set the MMA world ablaze with speculation. The most persistent rumor swirling around involves UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria moving up to challenge for Makhachev’s lightweight crown. This matchup would be massive – two undefeated champions colliding in a superfight that would have fans around the world glued to their screens. Topuria has been vocal about wanting to become a two-division champion. His explosive knockout power could pose interesting challenges for Makhachev’s grappling-heavy approach.
