The roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics is not yet decided for Canada National Team. Is Stuart Skinner a possible pick for the team's goaltending?
The 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics are merely months away. In the build-up to the 2026 season, it is important to note that the roster for the Olympics is not yet finalised. Apparently, by the time the roster for the Olympics is finalised, the NHL 2025-2026 season will be underway in full swing.
Team Canada’s GM, Doug Armstrong, recently appeared in an interview. During his session, he answered several questions about the Winter Olympics. While talking about the potential candidates for the goalkeeper, Armstrong said:
“That’s the most wide-open competition on our team right now.”
Can this projected roster for Canada win gold at the #MilanoCortina #Olympics? 🥇

It is obvious considering the fact that there hasn’t been any star goalie for Canada in the past two years. However, it can also be attributed to the fact that the NHL has not been to the Olympics since 2014. 2026 is going to be the first season for the NHL in the Olympics after a long break. Canada is looking forward to their third gold medal in the Olympics this winter.
The confusion and lack of clarity in the selection of players have raised an important question. Is Stuart Skinner, who was not invited to the Canada orientation camp earlier, a potential option for becoming the man between the pipes?
If we talk about the last season Skinner spent between the pipes, the situation looks rather bleak. He was facing a rough time last year with a save percentage of .896 in the 51 regular season games. Even during the playoffs, he could only manage a .889 save percentage in the 15 games he played for the Oilers.

The Edmonton Oilers were runners-up in the Stanley Cup finals last season. However, Skinner’s contribution to the team was significant two seasons ago. He was able to carry a save percentage of .914 during the regular season. If he had kept up the same consistency last season, he would have been among the top-5 starting goalies and top-10 in the goaltending save percentage.
It seems that Stuart Skinner is almost out of contention for the 2026 Winter Olympics. He sports great chemistry with star player and teammate, Connor McDavid. But, it may not be enough to get him the call to the Olympics this time.
While it is too early to count out Skinner for the 2026 roster, he is not in a good position either. His chances are rather weak and he may end up getting left out of the squad.
nhl I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in NHL, Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university’s Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
