Can Swiatek retain her title?
The great Billie Jean King once said, “Pressure is a privilege!” This will ring true for World No. 2 Iga Swiatek this week, as she prepares to defend her Italian Open crown in Rome. The Polish sensation beat Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets in last year’s final to capture the WTA-1000 trophy. After receiving a bye in Round-1, Swiatek opens her account against Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy.
While Swiatek is the firm favourite heading into the encounter, Cocciaretto will receive strong support from the local crowd. The 24-year-old defeated Elina Avanesyan of Armenia in three tight sets to book her spot in the Round of 64. A poor Madrid Open outing was sandwiched between two WTA-125 Round of 16 appearances for Cocciaretto. Currently ranked No. 82 in the world, the former Top-30 star has witnessed a steep drop.

It is safe to say that when we talk of underwhelming seasons, Iga Swiatek’s name pops up. The once practically unbeatable starlet is yet to win a title in 2025. The 23-year-old displayed an extremely high level of tennis in Madrid last week – she reached the semifinal stage before Coco Gauff thrashed her in lopsided fashion. Swiatek will be determined to pick up a trophy before Roland Garros, just like she did last year (Rome + Paris double).

Iga Swiatek and Elisabetta Cocciaretto have never faced each other on the WTA Tour. The 2025 Italian Open in Rome will be their maiden meeting. As a result, they have a 0-0 head to head record.

It is hard to look past the power and consistency of Iga Swiatek on the red dirt. She has won a hat-trick of Roland Garros championships now, and will fight for four in a row this year. She also won the Olympic bronze medal on Court Philippe Chatrier – on her favourite surface. It is unlikely that Cocciaretto will have the endurance and accuracy to match the No. 2 seed from the back of the court.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
