Swiatek is the defending champion in Madrid.
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has accomplished a great WTA-1000 record at the Mutua Madrid Open 2025. Over the years, Swiatek is known to be one of the most consistent players on tour. On Tuesday, the Polish star defeated Diana Shnaider of Russia 6-0 6-7(3) 6-4 to enter the last eight at the Spanish capital. In the process, she left the rest of the competition behind with this rare feat.
Iga Swiatek is a five-time Grand Slam champion on the WTA circuit. She is a former World No. 1 since 2022, and continues to chase Aryna Sabalenka for the top spot. The Roland Garros savant is no stranger to records and awards – she was crowned WTA’s Most Improved Player in 2020, before earning the title of WTA Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023. Now, Swiatek has ticked off another historic achievement in 2025.
With her thrilling win over Shnaider, defending Madrid Open champion Swiatek entered the quarterfinal stage – where she will face Madison Keys. In the process, the Pole became the only player on the circuit to reach all five WTA-1000 quarterfinals this year. Not even top seed and World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has been able to display such consistency at the premier events.

Starting with the Qatar Open, Iga Swiatek reached the semifinal stage in Doha. She lost to familiar foe Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets. A week later, she was ousted in the last eight of the Dubai Duty Free Championships by Mirra Andreeva. The Russian prodigy got the better of Swiatek yet again at Indian Wells, before rising southpaw Alexandra Eala conquered the five-time major champion 6-2 7-5 in Miami.
Owing to the fact that parts of Spain and Portugal suffered from severe power outages over the past couple of days, Swiatek had more time to focus and reset for her Round of 16 clash. Like her compatriots on the WTA Tour, the four-time Roland Garros champ used the extra time to gather her thoughts and spend some time away from tennis. “Honestly, I liked yesterday,” said the 23-year-old when asked about the power failures.
“I had time to rest.” Earlier this week, Swiatek revealed that she was detoxing by reading a book suggested to her by Brazilian star Beatriz Haddad Maia. “Honestly, I just chilled and used the time not thinking about what I should do. There was no signal so basically nobody used their phones. It was nice, I liked it.”
Will Iga Swiatek be able to retain her coveted Madrid Open crown? Remember, she is potentially on collision course with World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the summit clash.
