Winner to face Kostyuk or Maria in Round-3.
World No. 3 Iga Swiatek looks for a quick change in fortune, as she begins her campaign at the 2025 Cincinnati Open over the weekend. Having lost to Clara Tauson in Montreal last week, the Polish icon takes on Anastasia Potapova in the WTA-1000 Round of 64. It is set to be the second meeting in this rivalry between two fearless strikers of the ball. Follow The Playoffs News and BetMGM for everything you need to know across the tennis season.
After a historic run at the Wimbledon Championships where she claimed her sixth Grand Slam title, Iga Swiatek fell prey to Danish young gun Tauson in the Canadian Open Round of 16. On the whole, it has been a topsy-turvy 2025 campaign for the former World No. 1. Despite boasting an impressive 44-12 record so far, she found her footing only during the grass court season. Swiatek has been seeded third in Cincinnati this week, and will look to win her second trophy of the season.

Anastasia Potapova booked her spot in Round-2 with an assured 6-4 6-4 victory over German veteran Siegemund. The 24-year-old Russian was on a four-match losing streak since the French Open prior to her win, and is currently languishing at 20-12 for the season. Nonetheless, a quarterfinal showing at the Linz Open followed by a championship run at the Winners Open means that Potapova will enter this match with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude. She is currently ranked No. 45 in the world.

The World No. 3 is yet to drop a single game against her Russian counterpart. In their solitary meeting at the 2024 French Open, Swiatek defeated Potapova in two ruthless sets to advance to the quarterfinals. The top seed at the time, she went on to lift the trophy in Paris. The Cincinnati Open Round of 64 will be their first duel on hard courts.

Swiatek has a very strong record when it comes to opening matches at a tournament. Moreover, the Pole knows the formula to beat Potapova. While the Russian dominated baseline exchanges against Siegemund, she only managed 40% first serves in. Against someone like Swiatek who has a strong Plan-A and executes to perfection, any let up will be pounced upon. Expect Swiatek to consistently change direction and leave Potapova off balance.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
Swiatek is a strong favourite in terms of the betting market against underdog Potapova at the Cincinnati Open. According to the pre-match implied probability on the money line, the Pole has a 91% chance of winning this encounter.
