Sonnen pointed to Della Maddalena’s finishing ability as something that separates him from previous Muhammad opponents. Sonnen saved his highest praise for champion Belal Muhammad’s determination to defend his title despite serious health concerns. Late last year, Belal was supposed to take on Shavkat Rakhmonov, but ended up withdrawing due to a bone infection. The seriousness of this infection was not known to the public. Sonnen disclosed this while giving props to Muhammad for his toughness.

“Are you aware that he was on the fence whether he was going to live or die? All through an infection that came through his toe…What a stud Belal is. He is not gonna tell you he almost died… But i am choosing to do it because he deserves credit. That is what a badass does.”

Muhammad’s willingness to compete and that too for a different opponent shortly after getting compromised shows his commitment to being an active champion. The welterweight division has seen extended periods with inactive champions in recent years. Sonnen appreciated Muhammad’s old-school approach to championship responsibilities.
