Has There Ever Been A Three-peat In The NFL? Everything To Know About The NFL 3 Peat

There are 32 teams in the NFL and 20 of them have won at least one Super Bowl. Now, if we go down further in the history of the NFL, only 8 teams have won back-to-back championships.

The Chiefs are looking forward to three-peat. We have had multiple quarterbacks threaten the Chiefs and Mahomes, to advance and get past. However, only two have done it so far. Other star quarterbacks such as Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, Brock purdy, have not won once, against Mahomes, in the post season.

The only two quarterbacks who’ve beaten Patrick Mahomes in playoffs are Tom Brady and Joe Burrow. Brady’s already retired and Burrow has no help in Cincinnati to really challenge Mahomes again. So who will take down the Chiefs? Can the Eagles and Hurts finally be the one to stop them from three-peating? Or will it be the same fate, like it was back in 2022?

What Is A Three-peat In the NFL?

Three-Peat is a North American, informal, term that is used when a team wins three championships consecutively. This means that a team has to win championships three years in a row, in order to be called a three-peat. An examples would be the championships Chicago Bulls won in 1991, 1992, and 1993 consecutively.

Has Any NFL Team Three-peated?

No NFL team has ever won three straight championships. There were were teams who came close, but none have won three straight. Let’s look at the teams who came close;

Starting off with the Green Bay Packers, back in 1968, where they just missed the playoffs after winning two straight Superbowl in 1966 and 1967 against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders respectively.

In 1974, the Miami Dolphins lost in the divisional round against the Oakland Raiders after winning two straight championships in 1972 and 1973.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had two chances to three-peat, in 1976 and 1980. However, They lost in the Conference championship against the Oakland Raiders in ’76 and missed the playoffs entirely in 1980.

The San Francisco 49ers had a chance to three-peat but fell short, after losing to the New York Giants in the Conference Championship round.

The Dallas Cowboys won two in a row in 1992 and 1993 but lost to the 49ers in 1994, at the Conference Championship round.

The Denver Broncos were next who won back-to-back championships in 1998 and 1997 season but did not make the playoffs in 1999.

Tom Brady led, New England Patriots, were the last team who came close. They won two championships in 2003 and 2004 but failed to three-peat. They lost to the Denver Broncos in 2005 at the divisional round of the playoffs.

Patrick Mahomes And The Chiefs Have A Chance At NFL History

Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs can three-peat. It is something that has never been done before in the NFL by any team. Multiple teams have tried but no one has come as close as the Chiefs. The Chiefs are the only team in NFL history to advance to the Super Bowl in three-straight years after winning two back-to-back Super Bowls.

If they beat the Eagles, it will be Mahomes 4th title and the Chiefs could become the greatest dynasty in NFL history. The debate on who’s the NFL G.O.A.T, will have to take a new chapter all over again.
