Casper Ruud has won the pair's last 2 matches on clay
The first semi-final for the day will feature Francisco Cerundolo, ranked number 21 in the world, taking on the 15th-ranked Casper Ruud. This match promises to be a spectacular one, given that both players have an excellent clay-court game and both are currently in fine form.
Cerundolo started off his Madrid Open with straight-sets victories over Harold Mayot and Francisco Comesana in the second and third rounds, respectively, after a round one bye. His first big test came against the number 1-seeded Alexander Zverev in the round of 16, but the
Argentinian came through once again in just 2 sets. He dropped his first set of the tournament in the previous match against Jakub Mensik on the way to the semis.
As for Ruud, the Norwegian has played brilliantly, reaching this stage without dropping a set so far. He faced the likes of Taylor Fritz in the round of 16 and Daniil Medvedev in the quarters, but he defeated both of them without breaking a sweat. Following a bye in the first round, Ruud faced Arthur Rinderknech and Sebastian Korda in the second and third rounds, respectively.
Despite having a better overall record and success on tour, Ruud has struggled against his lower-ranked opponent, as Cerundolo maintains a 5-3 advantage in their head-to-head matches.
However, the players have split their matches 2-2 on clay, but it is the Norwegian who has won the last 2 of those. Nevertheless, the most recent couple of matches have gone Cerundolo’s way.

In spite of the fact that both are 26 years old, Ruud turned pro in 2015, while it took Cerundolo much longer to break through, becoming a pro only in 2018. Ruud holds 12 titles on tour, while Cerundolo holds only 3.
Moreover, Ruud has also been to three Grand Slam Finals, including the 2022 and 2023 French Open, and the 2022 US Open, whereas Cerundolo has not been past round 4 in any major.

With both players playing fine tennis on clay, this one is tough to call. Ideally, we should be in for a tightly contested battle that goes the distance, but if it comes down to holding nerve at the big moments, perhaps that is where the edge slightly lies with Ruud.
Match Prediction: Cerundolo in three sets

nfl I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
