2025 Madrid Open Women’s Doubles Semifinals: Victoria Azarenka, Jelena Ostapenko, Anna Kalinskaya to Feature in Star-Studded Semis

Who will win the women’s doubles crown?

While the singles events have been hogging a majority of the limelight, the women’s doubles competition at the WTA Madrid Open 2025 has sprung a pleasant surprise. There have been some exquisite encounters over this past week, which has led to the four best pairs reaching the semifinals. Needless to say, some of the world’s top stars will be gunning for glory at Caja Magica. What are the semifinal match-ups and when are they happening?

Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski started the tournament as the top seeds. However, they were ousted in the Round of 16 by Sorana Cirstea and Anna Kalinskaya. Two out of the eight doubles semifinalists have been champions in Madrid before. In 2024, the Spanish duo of Sara Sorribes Tormo and Cristina Bucsa took home the championship.

In the span of a few years, Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei have transformed into deceptively good doubles players – individually and as a pairing. Seeded No. 3 in Madrid, they will face the unseeded duo of Anna Kalinskaya and Sorana Cirstea in the semifinals. While Kalinskaya/Cirstea eased past Linda Noskova and Clara Tauson in the last eight, Hsieh/Ostapenko came through vs Beatriz Haddad Maia and Laura Siegemund.

Victoria Azarenka/Ashlyn Krueger vs Veronika Kudermetova/Elise Mertens

Mertens and Kudermetova pulled off the upset of the tournament when they tore apart No. 2 seeds and Olympic champions Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani 6-1 6-3 in the Round of 16. They went on to beat No. 8 seeds Sofia Kenin and Lyudmyla Kichenok in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Azarenka/Krueger were able to edge out experienced doubles stars Coco Gauff and Robin Montgomery in their last eight clash.
