Breaking Down the FIFA Club World Cup Semifinal Showdown Between Fluminense and Chelsea

Chelsea face a formidable challenge as they take on Brazilian side Fluminense in the FIFA Club World Cup semifinal at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

The Blues, coming off a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Palmeiras in the quarter-finals, will need to bring their A-game to secure a spot in the final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid. Fluminense, unbeaten in this tournament and led by former Chelsea legend Thiago Silva, are no strangers to causing upsets, having knocked out Inter Milan and Al-Hilal en route to the semifinals.

Fluminense Team News

Fluminense, managed by Renato Gaucho, are in fine form, having an 11-match unbeaten streak across all competitions. The Tricolor will be without left-back Rene, who is suspended after picking up a second yellow card in the tournament. Additionally, Juan Freytes and Martinelli are also suspended due to yellow card accumulations.

Despite these absences, Fluminense’s veteran core, including 40-year-old Thiago Silva, 37-year-old striker German Cano, and 44-year-old goalkeeper Fabio, provides strong leadership. Hercules, who has scored in both knockout-stage matches, will be a key attacking threat.

Fluminense Predicted Lineup

Fluminense Predicted XI (3-5-2): Fabio; Ignacio, Thiago Silva, Fuentes; Samuel Xavier, Hercules, Bernal, Nonato, Diogo Barbosa; Arias, Cano.

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca faces selection challenges with key players Liam Delap and Levi Colwill suspended after receiving their second yellow cards in the quarter-finals against Palmeiras. Romeo Lavia is also sidelined due to injury and will not be available for the match. However, new signing Joao Pedro, who made his Chelsea debut off the bench against Palmeiras, could be in line for his first start.

Maresca highlighted the need for adaptability, noting, “We’re going to have to find different solutions” to cover the absences. He also praised the quality and energy of Brazilian sides, indicating that Chelsea must be at their best to progress.

Chelsea Predicted Lineup

Chelsea Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Tosin, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo; Neto, Palmer, Nkunku; Pedro.
