Flawless Iga Swiatek Breaks World Record With Resounding Round-1 Win at US Open 2025

Polish superstar is gunning for a seventh major and the World No. 1 ranking.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek began her US Open 2025 campaign with a strong statement victory on Tuesday. The Polish phenom entered Arthur Ashe Stadium with intent in her eyes, and battered Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-1 6-2 to advance to the Round of 64. In the process, Swiatek broke a new opening round record, which showcases her unmatched dominance in the early stages of tournaments.

It was yet another rock solid outing for the Pole, who has only been getting better since the latter stages of the grass court campaign. Having failed to win a tour-level title in over 13 months, Swiatek fell just short at the Bad Homburg Open in June. However, she went one step further and captured the 2025 Wimbledon Championships trophy to return to the WTA Top-2. The 24-year-old backed it up by claiming a maiden Cincinnati Open crown in August – giving her a huge boost of momentum ahead of Flushing Meadows.

A former champion at the US Open from back in 2022, Swiatek is bidding to become the first female player to win the Wimbledon and US Open titles in the same season – since Serena Williams in 2012. This could also potentially ensure her return to #1 in the world. It was a masterful display from Swiatek against Arango; the only previous time they faced one another was in the juniors of Roland Garros 2017. Swiatek won 6-2 6-3 en route to the quarterfinals.

Iga Swiatek Breaks WTA Opening Round Record at US Open 2025

The monumental performance gave Iga Swiatek yet another impeccable record – she now holds the record for most consecutive opening round wins at WTA level. The six-time Grand Slam champion now has 65 back-to-back wins on tour – snatching the record from Monica Seles (who held the Open Era record with 64 consecutive tour-level opening round wins). The win also improved Swiatek’s overall Grand Slam Round-1 record to 26-1. Her only loss came to Viktorija Golubic at Wimbledon 2019.

The last time our current WTA World No. 2 lost in her opening match at an event, was in the 2021 WTA Finals vs Maria Sakkari. When it comes to knockout competitions, her last opening round defeat was to Ons Jabeur in Cincinnati 2021. On Tuesday, Swiatek’s count of 25 winners to 14 unforced errors was always going to be a level that Arango would struggle to match. She did not face a single break point, and lost just 10 points on serve throughout the encounter.

Iga Swiatek will face World No. 66 Suzan Lamens of Netherlands in the Round of 64 on Thursday.
