‘Financial Rules Have Killed Aston Villa’ – Ezri Konsa Slams Premier League Spending Rules

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa has hit out at the Premier League’s financial restrictions, claiming they “killed” the club’s transfer business this summer. Villa’s only major permanent signing came in early August, when they secured striker Evann Guessand from Nice for around £26m.

However, the Midlands side were forced to sell academy graduate Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle United for £40m. Aston Villa then scrambled to strengthen their squad late on transfer deadline day. In the final hours of the window, Villa added Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho along with Victor Lindelof.

Notably, Unai Emery’s side were in need of desperate reinforcements after a tough start to the season. Villa secured late deals for both the players to bolster their attack and midfield. Remarkably, Aston Villa remain the only Premier League side yet to score a goal this season. Their restricted business came after UEFA fined Villa in July for breaching financial regulations.

Aston Villa were warned they could even be barred from registering new players for the Europa League without a positive transfer balance. At the same time, the club also had to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which prevent sides from losing more than £105m over three years.

While on international duty with England, Ezri Konsa admitted,

“It is crazy. I don’t understand it myself but from the outside looking in, it doesn’t look too good. I know that and I know it’s really killed us this transfer window. We’re going to have to deal with what we’ve got now.”

“Everyone knows it’s been a tough start but it’s part of football. We’ve done some recruitment on deadline day so hopefully the boys that have come in can really help us.”

Villa narrowly missed out on Champions League football last season, finishing sixth behind Newcastle on goal difference. But this campaign has begun poorly, with just one point from their opening three matches. Konsa’s own season has also started on a tough note. He was sent off in the opening game against Newcastle – which ended 0-0. He then missed the 1-0 loss to Brentford through suspension. On his return, Villa were beaten 3-0 by Crystal Palace in their third match.
