Emma Navarro Stuns Iga Swiatek with Third-Set Bagel – No. 1 Seed Crashes Out of WTA China Open

Navarro’s stunning bagel toppled Swiatek at the WTA China Open

Emma Navarro pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the China Open 2025, defeating top seed and world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the fourth round on Tuesday. The American, who had only managed five games in their previous two encounters, produced her finest performance of the season to advance to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since the Australian Open. It also marked her third career win against a Top-2 player and her first against the six-time Grand Slam champion, Swiatek.

Navarro Breaks Through Against No. 1 Seed

Swiatek entered Beijing riding a six-match winning streak and the aura of title favorite, but it quickly unraveled. After fending off break points early, the Pole grabbed a 2-0 lead, only for Navarro to hit back with composed, aggressive play. The American strung together four straight games, converting two of three break opportunities, and closed out the opening set 6-4 after 50 minutes.

Swiatek, erratic throughout the first set, steadied herself in the second. Though Navarro broke early again, the world No. 2 responded with improved serving, firing six aces and winning 70% of points on her second serve. With the set tied late, Swiatek capitalized on a crucial break at 5-4 to push the match into a decider.

The third set, however, belonged entirely to Navarro. The 24-year-old dominated from the baseline, breaking Swiatek twice in the opening games and racing to a 4-0 lead. Swiatek’s error count mounted under pressure, while Navarro remained clinical, sealing the victory with a stunning 6-0 bagel to complete the upset in two hours and 30 minutes.

For Swiatek, the loss halts her momentum and denies her a chance to extend her strong form into Beijing. For Navarro, it represents a breakthrough moment, her fourth career Top-3 win and a reminder that she is capable of contending deep at the biggest events.

Iga Swiatek vs Emma Navarro: Key Stats

Despite striking nine aces to Navarro’s two, Swiatek’s serving numbers told a different story. The Pole landed 62% of first serves but won just 63% behind them, compared to Navarro’s more effective 71%. The American also held a clear edge on second serve points won (42% to 34%) and consistently applied pressure in return games, winning 66% of points against Swiatek’s shaky second serve.

Navarro’s ability to convert her chances proved decisive. She held 77% of her service games and broke Swiatek six times. In contrast, the World No. 2’s 54% hold rate highlighted how often she found herself under fire.

But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
