Dead rubber set to conclude Serena Williams Group in Riyadh.
WTA powerhouses Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys will contest a dead rubber at the 2025 WTA Finals in Riyadh on Wednesday. While the former has already qualified for the semifinals, the latter lost her opening two matches to get knocked out in the group stage. With Keys being seemingly ill after her previous encounter, all eyes will be on her fitness ahead of this match-up. After blowing hot and cold in the first half of the year, Elena Rybakina has caught fire when it mattered most. The 26-year-old won the Ningbo Open when qualification for the WTA Finals was on the line, and backed it up with a semifinal entry at the Japan Open. Currently ranked No. 6 in the world, she is the first woman to enter the final four stage here in Riyadh. Rybakina’s title charge at Strasbourg and six semifinal finishes have given her a record of 55-19 in 2025. The former Wimbledon champ has won 82% service games and 33% return games across the season.

Madison Keys came into 2025 with fire in her eyes and ice in her veins. The American announced herself with back-to-back trophies at the Adelaide International and the Australian Open. She also reached semifinals at Indian Wells and Queen’s Club, after which her season took a hit. The 30-year-old suffered from injuries and a dip in form, resulting in an opening round exit at Flushing Meadows. Keys broke into the Top-5 earlier this year, and her current ranking of No. 7 is primarily due to her success rate of 68% on first serves and 47% on second serves.
The head-to-head record between Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys is 3-3. Two out of the six encounters have been contested at the Grand Slam level. Meanwhile, they have also met thrice on American soil.

When Rybakina is in the ruthless form that she currently finds herself in, anything short of a 100% effort will fall short. As a result, the fitness of Keys will play a massive role in determining the outcome of this match. Although Rybakina has found herself in some tricky situations, she has trusted her groundstrokes and found the necessary depth to emerge victorious. Staying strong on serve will be of immense importance for both players on Wednesday, considering the short length of rallies.
